Resistance temperature detectors (RTD’s) are wire wound or thin film temperature sensing devices consisting of a wire coil or deposited film of pure metal (usually platinum). The elements resistance increases with temperature in a known and repeatable manner, therefore exhibiting excellent accuracy over a wide temperature range.

The platinum RTD produces a more linear curve than thermocouples and is used when accuracy of output is important as they are less sensitive to temperature changes than thermocouples.

Advantages of RTD's include: stable output for long period of time, ease of recalibration, and accurate readings over relatively narrow temperature spans (Temperature range -75°C +600°C).

A mineral insulated constructed RTD assembly ensures a temperature sensing device that is both rigid and robust, which gives it mechanical strength along with high vibration endurance.

These sensors are being used in many more applications now and are fast becoming a direct replacement for the conventional thermocouple where they offer closer accuracy tolerances compared with a thermocouple and also offering greater repeatability and stability.
